Gene and his next older brother, Verle, and next younger brother, Gail, double-dated all through school. They also worked together for several years until World War II separated them. Gene served in the United States Navy for three years, most of that time in the Pacific Theater.

In 1948 Gene married LORETTA MAXINE HEATHER. She brought a daughter into the marriage whom Gene adopted. Gene and Maxine had four children:

When Charles Lindberg died, Gene furnished the rough lumber for his coffin. (Lindberg had requested a Hawaiian burial; i. e., burial within a few hours after death in a rough coffin.)

WAILUKU - So much for first-game jitters. Jordan Helle decided to depend on his friends.
Helle, Baldwin High School's junior quarterback, made the first start of his career in the first Maui Interscholastic League game of the season Friday night at War Memorial Stadium and led the way to a shutout win.
The defending MIL champions beat their crosstown rivals from Maui High 41-0. Helle finished the night 22-for-35 for 297 yards with three touchdown passes. He also ran for a score.
With an offensive line that returned four starters controlling the line of scrimmage, Helle had plenty of time to find his friend and longtime basketball teammate Chase Nakamura all night long.
In the first half, Helle piled up 205 passing yards, going 12-for-21 with no interceptions. One of his passes - a 37-yarder to Nakamura - went for a touchdown as the Bears took a 20-0 halftime lead en route to their 14th consecutive MIL win.
Nakamura had six grabs for 135 yards in the first two quarters, and finished with nine catches for 170 yards.
"What can I say, it is the offense,'' Baldwin coach Jimmy Morimoto said. "Jordan kept his composure. He looked kind of rough in the beginning, but he kept his feet under him and delivered the ball to the receivers. The O-line did a great job tonight.''
Nakamura and Quinabo gave Helle targets to find all night.
"They make it easy for me,'' Helle said. "I have got four good receivers. My O-line did a great job tonight. I can't talk enough about them. Without them, we can't get them the ball. It all starts up there. They really came through for us tonight.''
Helle admitted to being slightly nervous before the opening kickoff.
"A little bit, you know, first-game jitters,'' he said. "It was tough to get them out at first. We didn't score on the first drive, but we finished pretty good. Maui High gave us good rubs in the beginning. I have to give it up to them, too.''
The first turnover led to the first touchdown of the season. Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi intercepted a pass over the middle by Maui High quarterback Lance Villa and returned it 20 yards to the Maui High 30-yard line.
Colten Quinabo, the No. 2 receiver in the league last season behind Nakamura, caught a 13-yard pass from Helle on the first play from scrimmage. Helle hit Nakamura just beyond the end zone on the next play, but one snap later, Quinabo took a reverse handoff 17 yards into the end zone. Dane Fernandez's kick gave the Bears a 7-0 lead with 3 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter.
